Black Eyed Peas | Printz Board & will.i.am Stage-Played Roland Juno-G Synthesizer (2006-2011)

A stage-played Roland Juno-G synthesizer workstation (serial #AX72711, manufactured late 2006 to early 2007) documented in the hands of two Black Eyed Peas keyboardists: will.i.am, who is photo-documented playing the instrument on stage prior to The E.N.D. tour, and Printz Board — musical director of the Black Eyed Peas — throughout The E.N.D. World Tour (2009-2011) for strings, piano, organ, clav, and bass textures across multiple songs in the band’s set. The instrument is documented by name in Keyboard Magazine‘s August 2010 cover story and is visible in the “World of a Music Director” video feature with Printz Board.

Historical Context

Stage & Performance Use

The Roland Juno-G was one of the most versatile instruments in Printz Board’s live rig. In the August 2010 Keyboard Magazine cover story, Board stated: “I use the Juno-G for so much stuff — the beginning strings in ‘Meet Me Halfway,’ and I love using the strings for ‘Glamorous.’ I’ll use it also for the piano in ‘Alive.’ Even for ‘Don’t Phunk With My Heart,’ I have it set up for some splits — organ and Clav. Then, I use it for bass on ‘Missing You.'”

In the “World of a Music Director” video, Printz Board is shown playing the Juno-G simultaneously with the Yamaha Motif XS7 — one hand on each instrument — demonstrating his live performance approach. The two instruments shared a single sustain pedal through a custom modification by tech Eric Harris, allowing Board to sustain either or both simultaneously. At 1m 20s in the video he plays both with no hands on the keys, saying: “Look, no hands.”
