A 1987 Marshall Silver Jubilee 2550 amplifier head stage-used by Ride during the band’s early touring era, including by Mark Gardener. The unit retains “RIDE” stenciling on the top and a “RIDE” crew label on the rear panel, and is visible behind Mark Gardener’s stage setup in live performance footage from the same era.
Video Documentation
Historical Context
The Marshall Silver Jubilee series was introduced in 1987 to celebrate Marshall’s 25th anniversary, and the 2550 head — switchable between 50 and 25 watts — quickly became one of the most sought-after amps of the era. Its dense, saturated overdrive and dynamic tube response made it particularly suited to the layered, textured guitar sounds that defined the shoegaze movement. For Ride, whose sonic identity during the Smile through Nowhere era depended on walls of controlled guitar distortion and feedback, this amplifier would have been a natural choice.
Ride formed in Oxford in 1988 and became one of the defining acts of the shoegaze movement alongside My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, and Lush. Their debut album Nowhere (1990) on Creation Records remains one of the essential records of the era.
Stage & Performance Use
The unit retains two forms of touring identification: “RIDE” stenciled on the top exterior in the same style used across the band’s touring equipment, and a “RIDE” crew identification label on the rear panel. An electrical safety test label (Mike Hill Services, 16 March 2015) documents the unit’s service history from the band’s touring infrastructure. The amp is visible in live footage from Ride’s early touring period.
